Event Industry Mobilizes

Newsletter 140: Turning Expertise into Action Amid California Wildfires

As I watch the devastating wildfires blaze around Los Angeles, vivid memories from 9/11 flood my mind as if it were only yesterday. These moments remind me of the strength and resilience within our industry, and it compelled me to write this week's article. Just as we rallied together in the aftermath of 9/11, we now have another opportunity to put our expertise into action by helping those affected by the wildfires. In this week's newsletter, we'll explore how the event industry is mobilizing to support our community and what we can all do to make a difference.

The event industry has always thrived on bringing people together, creating memorable experiences, and responding to unique challenges with creativity and resilience. However, our skills can be invaluable in times of crisis. As I watch the ongoing wildfires blazing around Los Angeles unfold, I'm reminded of my time living and working in New York during 2001, when we, as event professionals, pitched in and helped. Now, putting experience into action, event planners and producers are stepping up to aid their peers and communities. Here's how the event industry is making a difference and what we can all do to contribute.

Community Support: Harnessing the Power of Organization

One of the most remarkable aspects of the event industry is its unparalleled ability to organize and mobilize resources quickly. In times of crisis, this strength becomes a lifeline. Event professionals are uniquely equipped to coordinate large-scale relief efforts, from setting up temporary shelters to organizing donation drives. By leveraging their extensive networks and logistical expertise, they can ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.

Take, for example, an inspiring story shared by Andrea Doyle on the Skift Meetings website. Meredith Heller, co-founder of Prospect Events, was attending CES in Las Vegas when the fires broke out. She lives in Los Angeles, bordering the Palisades Fire. Whilst her house is still standing, she wanted to do something to help her community. Noticing an abundance of non-perishable food items at her CES client's booth gave her an idea for a collection drive. The client agreed to donate the leftover items, so she posted a call for donations on LinkedIn and was amazed by the response she received. Her car is now packed with drinks and snacks that she will donate upon returning to LA. This story highlights the event industry's capacity to quickly organize and provide substantial support.

Reflecting on 9/11: A Personal Experience

These wildfires bring back powerful memories of when I was living and working in New York during the terrorist attacks of 9/11. As an event producer, I witnessed firsthand how the event industry rallied to support their peers and the community during one of the most challenging times in our history.

Following the tragic events, event professionals came together to provide immediate support. Industry colleagues with catering experience volunteered at feeding stations set up to supply first responders at Ground Zero. The MPI Greater New York chapter set up a special subcommittee channeling funds earmarked for scholarships to organizations supporting those in the event industry who lost jobs or loved ones at Ground Zero.

The current wildfires evoke similar feelings of urgency and determination. Just as we did in the aftermath of 9/11, the event industry can once again play a crucial role in aiding those affected by this crisis.

Successful Initiatives: Inspiring Action Through Examples

Highlighting successful initiatives can serve as a powerful motivator for others in the industry to take similar actions. Consider this list of organizations and entities offering relief for musicians and music industry professionals affected by the Los Angeles blazes provided by Billboard. Stories of outreach and solidarity not only raise awareness but also inspire others to contribute and help fellow industry members. The ripple effect of such initiatives can spark widespread action, amplifying the event industry's collective impact.

Self-Care and Resilience: Supporting the Industry's Own

While it is crucial to support the wider community, it is equally important to address the well-being of event professionals themselves. The stress and emotional toll of dealing with such disasters can be overwhelming, particularly for those directly affected by the wildfires. Some will not just lose their homes, but possibly their jobs as well, as news comes in of cancelled movie premieres, delayed announcement of Oscar nominations.

Self-care and resilience are essential for maintaining the ability to help others. Providing access to mental health resources, peer-to-peer counseling, and industry-specific aid funds can make a significant difference. Encouraging open conversations about mental health and offering support networks within the industry can help event professionals navigate these challenging times.

Call to Action: Every Effort Counts

Now is the time for the event industry to put its experience into action. Whether you're an event planner, producer, or someone aspiring to enter the field, there are numerous ways to contribute. Organize local relief efforts, volunteer your time and skills, or participate in virtual fundraisers. Every effort, no matter how small, can make a difference.

In times of crisis, the spirit of collaboration and community becomes more important than ever. By coming together and leveraging our unique strengths, we can support those affected by the wildfires and demonstrate the profound impact of the event industry. Furthermore, as volunteers, we gain invaluable experience working alongside first responders and learning their processes, which can be instrumental when planning future events.

Let's turn our expertise into action and show the world what we’re capable of.
